Ireland’s Max Deegan wins U20 Player of the Tournament award

IRELAND’S MAX DEEGAN has been named the World Rugby U20 Championship Player of the Tournament for 2016.

The Lansdowne man received his award after the final of the competition this evening in Manchester, in which Ireland were beaten 45-21 by England.

Deegan was among the try-scorers, however, and his performances in Ireland’s run to the decider were superb.

The former St. Michael’s College student played in all five of Ireland’s games at the World Championship, starting four of them and also scoring tries against New Zealand and Argentina.

Deegan, who joins the Leinster academy this summer, is the first Irish player to win this award, with JJ Hanrahan in 2012 and Garry Ringrose in 2014 both having been nominated for its equivalent.

England’s Harry Mallinder, who was outstanding again in the final, was also nominated for this year’s award, but Deegan won out in the public vote.
